Knowing what’s available can help you visualize how and where you’ll fit workouts into your itinerary.

For example, hotel gyms are a great convenience, but if your accommodation doesn’t have one, there’s still hope! Apps like ClassPass can give you access to nearby fitness studios. Alternatively, you can take advantage of free online workout videos or portable equipment like resistance bands to create a mini gym in your room.

Pack Smart for Fitness

When it comes to working out on the go, what you pack can make or break your routine. My go-to items include a lightweight exercise mat, a set of resistance bands, a jump rope, and a reusable water bottle. These tools barely take up any space but provide plenty of versatility for different workouts.

Don’t forget to also pack appropriate activewear that suits your planned activities. You don’t want to let weather or discomfort hold you back, so pack layers if you’re expecting cooler weather or moisture-wicking tops for more humid destinations. Staying comfortable is key to staying motivated.

Tweak Your Timing

One of the perks of travel is breaking out of your usual daily routine, but it’s easy to let that excitement throw your fitness commitments out the window. I personally love a fast-paced bodyweight circuit or a sunrise jog if the location inspires me.

Alternatively, if early mornings aren’t your style, consider using pockets of time between meetings or tours for micro-workouts. Sometimes, even a 10-minute cardio burst or a quick yoga flow can do wonders. Look for creative ways to stay active—take the stairs, walk instead of using public transport, or do a few stretches while waiting at the airport gate.

If you're in a city with scenic trails, go for a run or hike. If there's a pool or beach nearby, opt for swimming—it’s not only a full-body workout but also a refreshing break from sightseeing.

In certain destinations, activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, or rock climbing can double as both exercise and adventure. Plus, these experiences create lasting memories and often get your heart pumping more than a traditional gym session!

Nutrition as Part of Your Fitness Routine

Fitness isn’t just about movement—what we put into our bodies plays a huge role in how we feel and perform. Travel often tempts us with indulgent foods and unfamiliar cuisines, so it’s essential to strike a balance. I always aim to maintain a mix of healthy meals alongside the occasional treat because, let’s face it, food is part of what makes traveling so exciting!

Some of my tips include packing snacks like nuts, protein bars, or fresh fruit to avoid relying on fast food during transit. Also, stay hydrated by carrying a water bottle with you at all times, particularly during flights or in hot climates. And when dining out, look for menu items that balance lean proteins, vegetables, and whole grains.

Flexibility is Key

Perhaps the most important lesson I’ve learned is to stay flexible—both literally and figuratively. Life happens, plans change, and some days you might miss a workout, but it’s all part of the process. What’s important is to approach your fitness routine with a mindset geared toward consistency over perfection.

For me, that means accepting that some days will be less intense than others. A light yoga session or a 15-minute stretching routine can feel just as rewarding as a high-intensity sweat session if it keeps me grounded and active. So give yourself grace—but don’t lose sight of what keeps you feeling your best.

Staying Motivated on the Go

Finally, pack your motivation alongside your sneakers! For me, that often means downloading podcasts or playlists that energize me or jotting down specific fitness goals for the trip. You could also consider using fitness apps like Strava, FitOn, or Peloton, which offer structured workouts and ways to track your progress remotely.

And let’s not underestimate the power of accountability. If you’re traveling with friends or colleagues, propose a group activity like a morning yoga class or an after-dinner walk. When others join in, staying active becomes much easier and even more enjoyable.
